BREASTFEEDING TIP - PASS HER THE BUTTER!

Breastfeeding diet – what to eat while breastfeeding

Modern dietary dogma would have us believe that fat is bad for us. The low fat craze is not based in science and for nursing Moms is particularly risky nutritional advice. Growing babies demand high levels of fat to grow properly – their developing brains and immune systems require fat to build neurotransmitters and hormones. Mama’s milk can be a wonderful source of nourishing fats for growing little ones! We encourage breastfeeding mothers to include healthy fats as a regular part of their breastfeeding nutrition.

Asked by breastfeeding Moms: are all fats created equal?

No. Great question. When possible, avoid trans fats from partially hydrogenated vegetable oils that are present in margarine and many processed foods. These fats potentially interfere with enzymatic processes. Instead, choose fats long revered by traditional cultures to promote longevity and vitality – butter, coconut oil and olive oil. Nutrient dense, healthy fats also provide energy for the exhausting postnatal period and helps to regulate sugar metabolism, which may prove helpful for those intense sugar cravings. Pass the butter! Butter is a great breastfeeding food!
