BREASTFEEDING WHEN SICK – IS IT SAFE?

Is It Safe To Breastfeed When I’m Sick?

Myth: If you get sick you shouldn’t breastfeed.

This is one of those counter-intuitive situations- we immediately want to protect and prevent our nurselings from picking up whatever we’ve been exposed to BUT the best way to actually protect them from getting sick is to continue nursing!

Breast milk is nothing short of miraculous…as soon as your body is exposed to an illness you begin to develop antibodies to help fight off the infection and these then transfer into your breast milk providing passive immunity to your baby- either preventing your infant from getting sick or helping to lessen the severity of the illness.

So yes, if you are sick you should continue to breastfeed! Nurse on Mommas! Remember to drink plenty of fluids and nurse on demand.
